Have You Always Been Into Astrology?

You may not believe it, but I wasn't always into Astrology. However as a December born child it always struck me as odd to have your birthday the same month as Christmas, because it made you feel like somehow you were twice as needy and demanding as everyone else, because you got to have two rounds of presents in close succession to each other, where as children who were born in the Summer would have birthdays spread out from Christmas. It is also somewhat strange to me as a December born child to experience this odd cut-off point from one year to another. When you are school-aged this means that someone born a month later than you would be in the grade below you, where as someone 11 months older than you would be in the same class. To be born in Decemeber is to be born close to this arbitary marker of the end-of-the-year, arbitrary because why is it necessary to start a year in January? We start the year at the darkest point, then experience spring equinox as a balancing of light and darkness, then summer as peak lightness, the autumnal fall back into darkness, and then back to Winter. Why make Winter the Start and End of the Story? Even if our society does not believe in Astrology, the truth is that we still follow a 12 Month Calender System, with each of these Months representing a Monthly Lunar Cycle. Into this we decide to make Winter the Beginning and the End, and even if this is an arbitrary decision it apparently has real effects on December Born Children who are expected to compete for grades with children who have had a up to a whole year longer to advance their brain development! (A 2017 study in JAMA Pediatrics found that children who were the youngest in their grade were about 30–50% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than the oldest children.)

If you believe in Astrology or not, it still influences the world we live in, even at the most mundane level of how we structure our time through a calander system. Even if this somewhat arbitrary, and we could structure things differently, these forms of rigid structures none-the-less play a role in shaping the world we live in.

What made you get into Astrology?

I was going through a period of confusion and uncertainty. During a time of great change and transition in my life I had begun experimenting with powerful psychedelic substances, perhaps in a way that was reckless. After taking perhaps the wrong combination of drugs I had a bad trip, and descended into Psychosis. At first I wasn't even really all that interested in Astrology, I was just really turned off by the mental health system, and I was looking for some other way of understanding the experiences I was having, in terms of "Spiritual Mania", rather than a biomedical malfunctioning of my brain. It was in this context that I sought someone out, looking for guidance, and it was their idea, not mine, to look at was going on in my Astrology chart. This was back in 2012, and it wasn't until years later, as I was attempting to come off Anti-Psychotic Medication, that I realized that even if Astrology wasn't something I was initially drawn to on my own, it was like my mind had this excess of energy that need to be invested in producing stories, fantasies or daydreams. I saw the opportunity to use Astrology Therapeutically, to give my mind an opportunity to go to work and intentionally produce a kind of dream or fantasy about what was going on based on the symbols and signs of the planets and a zodiac, and most importantly to have the opportunity to particpate in a collective process of doing this, rather than feeling like my own creative "myth-making" was happening in an isolated vacuum, where I am misunderstood as some kind of simpleton or idiot by adults who have basically amputated their imaginative capacity, opting to live in a lifeless world devoid of spirit and meaning! In this sense, Astrology has served me as a valuable creative outlet, as well as a practical tool for refining my sensitivity and intuitive faculties.
